Sam Jennings is a Director of Berry Ottaway & Associates Ltd in the UK, providing scientific, technical and UK/EU regulatory support to the food industry, specialising in food supplements and functional foods. Since 2006, Sam has been Technical Adviser to the Council for Responsible Nutrition UK (CRN UK), offering technical and regulatory support and advice to the CRN UK membership, to regulators and to other stakeholders.
Sam is a Fellow of the Institute of Food Science and Technology (IFST) in the UK and is Chair of the IFST Food Law Steering Group. She is also a member of the Institute of Food Technologists, USA and has been a member of the International Alliance of Dietary/Food Supplement Associations (IADSA) international Technical Working Group since its conception in 2010, and Chair of this group from 2012 to 2017. Sam is Vice-Chair of the UK government’s Office for Product Safety and Standards Business Expert (Food Standards & Labelling) Group and is a member of the Food Standards Agency’s Regulating our Future Working Group on Food Standards and Labelling.
CRN UK has a strong belief in a science-based collaborative approach to solving issues affecting the food supplements sector and because of this, Sam is able to work closely with the UK authorities. In her role as Technical Adviser for CRN UK, she participates in regular meetings with the UK authorities on various issues, including compliance and enforcement issues and the implications of Brexit.
Sam is joint editor, and contributor to, a textbook by the CRN UK Technical Committee, ‘Technical Aspects of Manufacturing Food Supplements’ (2017).
Sam has presented to governments and industry worldwide on topics including stability of food supplements, EU food law, GMP, purchasing quality ingredients and other technical issues as required. She also runs tailored workshops for companies on EU food law.
